Our church owns a cabin right outside of Asheville, and for the past two years we’ve stayed there with a group of friends for labor day weekend. This year we played a lot of board games, spent a lot of time on the porch, and went for a couple of stunningly beautiful hikes in the mountains. We had friends come from different cities and different states, and it was perfect!
Saturday there were supposed to be some scattered thunderstorms to we kept our adventuring close to the cabin. We went in to Black Mountain, a small town just east of Asheville and visited the Dipolator, a cute little coffee shop that came highly recommended. It did not disappoint! We ate lunch out and played lawn games on the town green before going back to the cabin.
Sunday the weather was supposed to be more clear, so we had a lazy morning and left mid-afternoon with a packed dinner for a sunset hike along the Blue Ridge Parkway. We had to drive over an hour to get to Black Balsam Knob (the first hike we did), but it was oh so worth it. Whenever a website says there’s a bald with 360 degree views, do it. Just do it. There were some ominous clouds, but we kept going anyway and they just rolled on through. We thought that hike would take longer, but since it didn’t we went a couple miles further on the parkway to Devil’s Courthouse to watch the sunset. Let me just tell you, the view there took my breath away.
We started taking pictures and then didn’t stop for a while. None of us were really dressed for a photo shoot, but I LOVE the pictures we got. And I love the photo of all us on top of Black Balsam Knob. Aren’t friends great?
Tickling me for a picture, as usual.
I still cannot get over this view. One of my favorite places on the Blue Ridge Parkway to date!
