Finding the Best Light
The word photography actually means writing or drawing with light. I absolutely LOVE that image, because for a photographer, light is everything. My job is to make beautiful photos no matter the situation, but the reality is that I can’t manufacture beautiful light. You just don’t get those breathtaking sunsets at noon. I want my couples to get the most out of their wedding photography and one of the best ways to do that is to think about the light!
Here are some thoughts to consider:
1. Look at what time sunset will be on your wedding day, and plan around it. You can look this up online pretty easily. The best time for portraits is about an hour before sunset, so if you can, plan your couple portraits for that time.
2. If you’re looking at indoor venues, look for windows! Window light is by far the best indoor light, whether it’s for the preparation photos or the ceremony. Many modern churches are built without windows in the sanctuary, and stage lights makes high contrast photos.
3. If you’re looking for outdoor venues, think about where the sun will be at the time of your ceremony. Early afternoon ceremonies in bright sunlight will also create harsh shadows. Consider adjusting the time of the ceremony to later in the day or looking for an outdoor venue where the ceremony site is in the shade.
